{"id":64,"date":"2013-06-20T00:53:28","date_gmt":"2013-06-20T05:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.petitefreespirit.com\/2013\/06\/imagine-2013-taksim-square\/"},"modified":"2020-06-10T19:47:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T00:47:05","slug":"imagine-2013-taksim-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petitefreespirit.com\/index.php\/2013\/06\/20\/imagine-2013-taksim-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Imagine 2013: Taksim Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P align=justify><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\" face=arial><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT>During my pointing and clicking online, I ran into this video &#8211; imagine that.&nbsp; Imagine is a powerful song although it is simple &#8211; a voice and a piano.&nbsp; Yet, the song resonates.&nbsp; <br \/>\n<P align=justify><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\" face=arial><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT>Dissent always interests me, so, conceptually, the location of the performance immediately drew me in.&nbsp; For over two weeks, citizens in Istanbul have gathered together to protest&nbsp;<font style=\"font-size: 14px;\" face=\"arial\">Prime Minister<\/font> Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan&#8217;s plans to tear up Gezi Park in order to make way for a commercial development (of all things, a mall).&nbsp; In addition, prior to the park demolition, Erdo\u011fan already announced plans to curtail the sale and use of alcohol in this Muslim, but secular, society.&nbsp; Over time, the protest evolved from outrage over plans to destroy one of the last public green spaces in Istanbul to an outraged national response to the Prime Minister&#8217;s authoritarian policy changes as other cities protested in solidarity.&nbsp; <br \/><P align=justify><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\" face=arial><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT><FONT style=\"FONT-SIZE: 85%\"><\/FONT>As more and more citizens take to public spaces to demonstrate dissent with their government, the dissent is met with policing reminiscent of Birmingham under Bull Connor.&nbsp; Yet, despite the photos of police using overwhelming force against dissenters, there also exists the underlying stories of the dissenters&#8217; solidarity and non-violent resistance.&nbsp; The establishment of a people&#8217;s library with free books.&nbsp; Dissenters cleaning up the park after leaving.&nbsp; The establishment of an orderly tent city.
